When we stop making shapes, when we begin to feel…we heal.
As yogis (surfers, movers…) we learn the wonderful processes of awakening through the stimulation of our bodies and minds. And it really is through Interoception – the sensing of the physiological state inside our bodies. Fascia, the organ of wholeness, is our organ of interoception.
Interoception sparks an infinite source of information about our bodies from within. Being aware of it, helps us to increase our way of moving more contemplatively.
Instead of imposing postures, shapes or movement ideas on ourselves, we watch internally and move according to the messages to follow the opening lines of energy. It’s our natural way of being.
When Diane Long first introduced me to the teachings of Vanda Scaravelli – I was like: ‘Yeah, this is very different to what I learned so far, but it’s what I suspected yoga is for me. It’s not a handstand, full split or perfectly bound twist. This way of practicing is what I understand as the practice of yoga. I want to feel, not think it. Here I learn to live with more awareness, with more intensity.’
In practice, I use yoga postures and flows as frameworks, as ideas, but not as an ultimate goal.
In this way you watch and notice the places where your body is holding on a deeper level than your muscles or connective tissue. You learn to feel the fast and slow vibrations of your neurological patterning and when you allow yourself to let go and open even deeper, you notice these openings giving way to your powerful life-force, prana. (This can be a new, scary place. Many of us don’t even want to go there, because it is so powerful. ‘Who am I to be happy, vibrant, strong and healthy. We ask?’ , right? )
Prana then shows how it wants to move through your body, how it wants to change direction, to fill you, exhilarate you, restore and heal you.
Interoceptive movement teaches you sensitivity and the more sensitive you are, the deeper the patterns you are able to unwind. The more you do that, the more freedom, love and passion for life you experience.
Research shows that anxiety, depression, digestive problems, and eating disorders for example, are very likely connected to a lack of interoception, and by refining our sense of interoception the curing results are remarkable.
The more you become aware of the sensations of your body (of heat, cold, hunger, tension, relaxation etc.) and the more you surrender to the organic mastermind of your breath, the more unblocked you become to the possibility of transformation.
The body, the breath and with it, the people you love are your greatest teachers. Every second of your life you have the chance to go with the possibility of healing and change. Feel in boldly and open. You are powerful and free.
